2010 Hardy Lake Sweep Patch Order Form

Over 200 Volunteers Make 9th Annual Hardy Lake Sweep a Great Success!

On Saturday, April 24th, Jefferson and Scott County Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at Hardy Lake hosted the 9th Annual Hardy Lake Sweep.  There were over 200 volunteers who donated their morning to pick up waste and debris in and around the watershed area of Hardy Lake State Reservoir.  The event falls between the national celebrations of Earth Day and the National Association of Conservation Districts Stewardship Week.

Despite the early-morning rain, volunteers came cheerful, enthusiastic and ready to work.  There were numerous Scouting groups from Scott and Jefferson County.  There were also community and 4-H groups, as well as individuals and families.  The volunteers spent the morning picking up tons of trash and put in over 800 hours of volunteer time worth about $15,600.  They cleaned up more than 47 miles of county roads.  The volunteers received a t-shirt, lunch and were offered a free night of camping by Hardy Lake DNR.

Generous support came from the many sponsors of this year’s event.  The Scott County Visitor’s Commission was the primary sponsor.   Pepsi Cola donated cases of soda and water.  Pioneer Village provided lunch at a reduced rate.  Jefferson County Commissioners provided a 40 foot trash dumpster.  Both Deputy and Johnson Volunteer Fire Departments were present.  Scottsburg Middle School provided funds through a conservation education grant.  Other sponsors included Hardy Lake Friends, Coca-Cola, Austin Tri-Hawk, GarTech Enterprises, Jennings Township Conservation Club, Laura Fribley, Pioneer Village and Madison Wal-mart.   A big ‘Thank You’ for publicity of the event goes to the Giveaway and Journal newspapers as well as WMPI radio.

The Sweep’s intent is to educate the community on the problems of illegal dumping and littering in Scott and Jefferson Counties.  Littering has a harmful effect on our environment and places an economic burden on landowners and the local government.  The community working together can protect our water and land.  Become a Volunteer.  You can help by forming organized cleanups or by simply walking in your community to pick up trash.  Your behavior is influential – others who see you will do the same.  Be part of the solution.  Do not illegally dump your trash.  Recycle as much as possible:  cans, glass, aluminum, paper bags, newspapers, scrap metal, etc.

Finally, you can volunteer next year to be part of Hardy Lake Sweep.  Mark your calendar today for April 23, 2011.  Please call the Scott County SWCD 812-752-2269, ext. 114 for more information.
